This is going to be controversial. Tomorrow in La Tribu we’re talking about money preferences. How do you spend money? Do you pay? Do you split the bill? Do you invite people? Are you generous… or are you una rata? In Spanish, ser una rata means to be stingy. But listen… we all have a little rat inside.

So I’m going to answer some questions, and you tell me: ¿Soy generosa o soy una rata?

¿Tarjeta o efectivo?
¿Qué prefieres, pagar con tarjeta o pagar en efectivo? What do you prefer, paying by card or paying in cash?
Answer: I prefer paying by card. Always. Cash makes me nervous. Yo prefiero pagar con tarjeta porque soy una mujer moderna. Also, if I pay by card, I can pretend I didn’t spend money. It’s not real until I check my bank account and cry.

¿Invitar o partir la cuenta?
¿Qué prefieres, invitar o partir la cuenta? What do you prefer, treating someone or splitting the bill?
Answer: Depende. If I love you, I invite. Te invito. If I barely know you and you ordered three cocktails, a starter, dessert and “just a little side dish”… Sweetheart, we are splitting that bill with surgical precision. Partimos la cuenta. I am generous, not stupid.

¿Gastar o ahorrar?
¿Qué prefieres, gastar dinero o ahorrar dinero? What do you prefer, spending money or saving money?
Answer: I prefer saving money. But I also prefer spending money. So basically, I prefer lying to myself. Me gusta ahorrar dinero. But then I see a discount and suddenly I become a philosopher: La vida es corta. Life is short. He trabajado mucho. I have worked hard. Me lo merezco. I deserve it. And boom. Package arriving mañana…
