Hola, Do You Hablas English? — How Real Spanish Conversations Actually Start

Yesterday in class, one of my students told me something very real.

She was at the beach. She heard a group of guys speaking Spanish. She stayed listening. She didn’t understand a single word. Nada.

She told me: “I felt stupid. I couldn’t catch a single word.”

I stopped her right there. Tranquila. This is completely normal. With background noise, people talking fast, several voices at once… I don’t understand everything either. Not even close. Ni de lejos.

Then She Told Me Something Else

There was a guy. A Latin guy. She liked him. She wanted to talk to him. But she didn’t.

So we played a game in class: “What would you actually say?” Not what you wish you could say. What you would really say, right now, with your current Spanish.

She tried:

— “Hola… eh… sorry… do you… hablas… English?”
Él: — “Sí, sí.”
Ella (panic mode): — “Ah. Ok. Good. I mean… I’m learning Spanish… pero… little.”
Él: — “Ah, perfecto.”
Silencio incómodo. Both smiling. Both thinking.
Ella: — “You’re from… eh… aquí?”
Él (riendo): — “No, de México.”
Ella: — “Ah! México! I like… tacos. Mucho.”

They both laughed.

THIS. This Is It.

Not perfect Spanish. Not fluent. Not elegant. But real.

A real conversation between two humans, using whatever words they have, mixing languages, laughing a little, feeling awkward.

Speaking Spanish starts ugly. And simple. And messy. That’s how it works.

Not how to sound impressive. How to start.

Because Spanish is not something you perform. It’s something you use. And next time, maybe… the conversation doesn’t stop at tacos.
