The Most Chaotic Way to Learn Spanish Is Also the Most Effective
In 2007, a major publisher had a wild idea: let the entire internet write a novel together. It was a disaster. It was also brilliant. And it proved something important about language, creativity, and what happens when humans collaborate without rules.
This email is Mónica’s version — but in Spanglish. Because that’s what The Spanish Tribe (La Tribu) does: we take big, messy, human ideas and run them through the most honest language in the world. The one that lives between English and Spanish. The one you’re learning right now, whether you know it or not.

📧 A Million Penguins — Let’s Write a Book Together
En 2007, Penguin, sí, la gran editorial, the one with the penguin, lanzó un experimento. Fallido. A failure. But look, it was really interesting.
They gave access a una wiki a todo el mundo y dijeron: “Write a novel. Together. All of you.” Lo llamaron A Million Penguins. El resultado fue un caos absoluto. Brilliant, pero caos. Someone rewrote what someone else had just written. Characters appeared out of nowhere. La trama se iba por las ramas en formas que nadie había imaginado. An editorial disaster. And also proof that the idea was too good to throw away.
Y ahora nosotros vamos a intentarlo. En Spanglish. Yes, we are going to write a book. Escribir un libro juntos. Together. Una novela de ficción where the community decides what happens, who appears, and where it all takes place. Escrita en ese idioma raro que los que mezclamos español e inglés hablamos perfectamente.
No te cuento más por ahora. Solo quiero saber una cosa: ¿Would you like to leer the first chapter when it’s ready? Reply “SI” and I’ll send it to you as soon as it’s done.
Un saludo, Mónica
What This Email Teaches You About Spanish and Language Learning
Notice how naturally you read that Spanglish? That’s not an accident. Spanglish — mixing Spanish and English fluidly — is how millions of people actually communicate. And reading it is one of the best ways to absorb Spanish vocabulary without even trying.
Key vocabulary from this email:
- la gran editorial = the big publisher
- lanzó = launched (past tense of lanzar)
- el resultado = the result
- caos absoluto = absolute chaos — sounds almost the same in English!
- la trama = the plot
- irse por las ramas = to go off on tangents (literally: to go off into the branches)
- juntos/juntas = together
- ese idioma raro = that weird language
The A Million Penguins experiment failed because there was no shared voice, no shared identity. In La Tribu (The Spanish Tribe), we have exactly that: a community with a shared language, shared stories, and a shared obsession with speaking Spanish the real way.
