¿Qué Demonios Es Bizum? — Real Spanish in Real Life
Two phrases from this email say everything about what real Spanish actually is:
¿Eres generoso/a o eres una rata? (Are you generous or are you a rat?) — not a textbook question. A human question. The kind that gets people laughing and talking.
¿Qué demonios es Bizum? (What the hell is Bizum?) — Bizum is Spain’s most popular mobile payment app, used by everyone. This question is what a non-Spanish person asks when they’re living the Spanish experience in real time. And it’s exactly the kind of question you can only ask in a community.
Key vocabulary from this email:
- la magia — the magic
- ¿qué demonios? — what the hell? / what on earth? (demonios = demons, used as emphasis)
- naif — naïve (borrowed from French, used in Spanish too)
- ¡Buena suerte! — Good luck! (sometimes sarcastic, as here)
