Do I Need to Learn Vosotros? (Yes, If Spain Is Your Goal)

Quick answer: vosotros (informal “you all”) is used only in Spain. If you’ll live in, travel to or talk with people from Spain, learn to understand it from day one and to use it soon. If your Spanish is for Latin America, you can skip it and use ustedes, which everyone in Spain understands too.

Many courses skip vosotros “because it’s only Spain”. Then learners arrive in Madrid, sit at a table with friends and everybody says “¿Qué queréis tomar?”. If your ears have never heard it, you freeze.

The rest of the vosotros family

  • os (object): Os quiero = I love you (all).
  • vuestro / vuestra (your): ¿Es vuestra casa?
  • Imperative: ¡Venid! (come!), ¡Sentaos! (sit down!). In speech many people say “¡Venir!”, and you’ll hear it constantly even if textbooks say it’s wrong.
Mónica’s tip: learn 8 verbs with vosotros as chunks (“¿Qué queréis?”, “¿Cómo estáis?”, “¿Vais a…?”) and you’ll cover most real situations. Don’t memorise tables: use them in sentences.
