Hola, I’m Mónica, a Spanish teacher from Madrid. This is the sentence I hear more than any other on my first calls:
“I understand almost everything… but when I have to speak, my mind goes blank.”
If that’s you, two things. First: you’re not bad at languages. Second: you’re not alone. It’s the most common problem in language learning, and it has a name, a cause and a solution.
Why you understand Spanish but can’t speak it: 5 reasons
1. You’ve trained your ears, not your mouth
Apps, series, podcasts, books: all of them train recognition. When you hear “¿Me pones una caña?” you know what it means. But to say it, your brain has to go and fetch every word on its own, fast. That’s retrieval, and it’s a muscle you’ve hardly used. Understanding 80% and speaking 20% isn’t a mystery: it’s exactly what you’ve practised.
2. You translate everything in your head
You think the sentence in English, translate it word by word, check the grammar… and by the time it’s ready, the conversation has moved on. Native speakers don’t build sentences word by word. They use ready-made chunks: “es que…”, “a ver…”, “no me digas”. Chunks come out whole, without thinking.
3. You’re waiting to be “ready”
“When my grammar is better, I’ll start speaking.” Spoiler: that day never comes. You don’t get ready to speak and then speak. You speak, badly, and that’s what gets you ready.
4. Fear switches your Spanish off
Linguist Stephen Krashen called it the affective filter: when you’re stressed or afraid of looking stupid, your brain literally blocks the language. That’s why you can follow a whole series at home and then freeze in front of a waiter. Your Spanish didn’t disappear. Your nerves locked it.
When I arrived in Perth, a magpie attacked me in the street. Without thinking, I screamed: “¡Ay, la madre que lo parió!” No translating, no grammar check. Real emotion, zero filter. That’s what fluency feels like.
5. You don’t speak often enough
One conversation a month isn’t practice, it’s an exam. Retrieval gets faster with repetition: short, frequent, with the same people, about real things. Most learners simply don’t have anyone to speak with every week.
“I grew up hearing Spanish but can’t speak it”
If your parents or grandparents spoke Spanish at home and you answered in English, you’re what linguists call a passive or receptive bilingual. You understand a lot, sometimes almost everything, but speaking feels impossible, and maybe a bit embarrassing in front of family. Good news: your ear is already there. You need speaking practice in a place where nobody judges you, and the jump is usually faster than for anyone else.
How to go from understanding to speaking: 7 steps
- Learn chunks, not words. Ten phrases that buy you time (table below) are worth more than 500 single words.
- Talk to yourself in Spanish. Describe what you’re doing while you cook or walk: “Ahora corto la cebolla…” It’s retrieval practice with zero audience.
- Shadowing. Play a short clip and repeat right after the speaker, copying the rhythm. Your mouth learns the speed.
- Tell the same 2-minute story three times. The third time it flows. That’s retrieval getting faster.
- Use Spanglish when you get stuck. “Ayer fui al… ¿cómo se dice?… dentist.” Keep going. Silence is the only real mistake. More here: why Spanglish makes you fluent faster.
- Record yourself once a week. One minute about your week. In a month, listen to the first one. You’ll hear the difference.
- Speak every week with real people. A small group or a teacher who lets you talk, doesn’t interrupt every sentence and gives you feedback at the end.
10 phrases that buy you time when you freeze
| Spanish | What it does |
|---|---|
| A ver… | Let’s see… (gives you 2 seconds) |
| Pues… | Well… (the most Spanish way to start an answer) |
| Es que… | The thing is… |
| O sea… | I mean… |
| Bueno… | Well / OK… |
| ¿Cómo se dice…? | How do you say…? |
| No sé cómo decirlo, pero… | I don’t know how to say it, but… |
| ¿Me lo repites más despacio? | Can you say it again more slowly? |
| Espera, espera… | Wait, wait… (and keep thinking) |
| ¿Sabes lo que quiero decir? | Do you know what I mean? |
Which of the 5 is your block?
Most people have one main block, sometimes two. Knowing which one changes everything: someone who translates in their head needs chunks; someone blocked by fear needs a safe group; someone who never speaks needs a weekly habit. That’s exactly what I look at in a 30-minute Spanish Speaking Roadmap call.

FAQ
Why can I understand Spanish but not speak it?
Because understanding and speaking are different skills. Understanding uses recognition (you hear a word and know it). Speaking needs retrieval (finding the word fast, with no clues). If you’ve mostly listened and read, you’ve trained recognition, not retrieval. Add fear of mistakes and translating in your head, and you freeze.
Is it normal to understand more than you can speak?
Yes, completely. Every learner understands more than they can say. The gap only becomes a problem when you never practise speaking, so retrieval never gets faster.
What is a passive bilingual?
Someone who grew up hearing a language at home and understands it well but can’t speak it fluently. It’s very common among children of Spanish-speaking parents, and it’s very fixable with speaking practice.
How long does it take to go from understanding to speaking?
With regular speaking practice, most people notice a real difference in a few weeks. What matters is speaking every week, not studying more.
Can I learn to speak Spanish without living in a Spanish-speaking country?
Yes. You need regular conversation with real people, not a plane ticket. Online small groups and private classes work very well.
