The Spanish numbers facts
But before we go to the list of numbers, some interesting facts about numbers in Spanish:
- Spanish uses a base-10 numbering system like English, meaning that each digit from 0 to 9 represents a unique quantity and the position of the digits determines the magnitude of the number.
- The Spanish numbers for 16 to 19 have a unique form, using a combination of the words “diez” (ten) and “seis”, “siete”, “ocho”, and “nueve” respectively. For example, “dieciséis” means “ten and six”, and “diecinueve” means “ten and nine”.
- Numbers in Spanish are written with a comma instead of a period to separate the thousands, and a period instead of a comma to separate decimals. For example, 1,000 is written as “1.000″ in Spanish, while 1.5 is written as “1,5”.
- When counting in Spanish, the word “y” (and) is used between the tens and the units. For example, “treinta y uno” means “thirty-one”.
- The number 15 has a unique name in Spanish, “quince”, which is not derived from the root words for ten and five as it is in English.
- In Spanish-speaking countries, phone numbers are typically said digit by digit rather than in groups of three as they are in English. For example, the number 555-1234 would be pronounced “cinco cinco cinco, uno dos tres cuatro”.
I hope you find these facts interesting and helpful!
